My 2018 Christmas season got off to a flying start on 29th November with my first visit to Manchester’s Britannia Hotel. Great to see some familiar faces in the audience from previous years and so nice to receive a warm welcome from the management and staff. The Christmas lunch market seems to be expanding though and several other venues have stepped in with bookings throughout the season which means I won’t be doing as many at the Britannia. Can’t complain really but wish I could be in two places at once!
Now into the third week and singing for 2.5 to 3 hours non-stop every day is putting the old vocal chords to the test. If I did that length of time every day in the gym I’d be the fittest 72 year old on the planet (or more likely dead).
My Santa gigs are also going down well with 5 to come at Manchester’s Hard Rock Cafe plus a couple more at the Royal Toby Hotel in Rochdale. funnily enough, these gigs have more of an adverse effect on my voice than the singing gigs. Santa’s gruff (but friendly) tones can prove to be quite a strain.
I should also mention at this point that my lovely wife Brenda (the boss) is my rock who not only attends most of my singing gigs but also plays the role of Mother Christmas when the opportunity arises.
Better go now and get on with it!
